Our Founder

St. Louis Marie De Montfort

St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, our Founder, was born on 31st January 1673 in a small town Montfort, in western France. From his early childhood, he was known for his unwavering love for the poor and the marginalized. He was deeply attached to Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

He became a priest and dedicated his life completely to God, serving the poor and those who were neglected by the society. Traveling from place to place, he spread the enduring message of God's love. He taught, served, and stood up for the poor and needy throughout his life. Though his intense love for the lowly and abandoned sometimes gave him a rugged appearance, in heart and action, he was truly an angel of peace.

St. Montfort was a great scholar and a powerful preacher. He authored several significant spiritual works. Some of his best-known books include The Love of Eternal Wisdom, True Devotion to Mary, and The Secret of the Rosary. Gifted in painting, carving and poetry, he was in many ways, a spiritual Leonardo da Vinci. Courageous in proclaiming the truth and firm in doing what was right before God, he was often misunderstood and persecuted by the worldly-minded people around him. In his lifetime, he started nearly six charity schools all for the poor children who could not afford to pay fees.

These persecutions contributed to his early death on 28th April 1716, at the age of 43. He was acclaimed a saint by the people and later canonized by the Church. During his lifetime, he founded several groups of dedicated men and women to continue his mission, especially in the field of education for the poor and less privileged.

Among them, the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel stands out as a major congregation of educators. Three Brothers arrived in Pondicherry from France, in 1903 and began their educational mission particularly for the under privileged. In 2003, the Montfort Brothers celebrated 100 years of exceptional service to the Nation - a testament to St. Montfort’s lasting legacy.

Montfort Community School is perpetuating what St.Montfort advocated for and carried out during his lifetime.
