“We can do no great things; only small things with great love”
- St.Mother Teresa
“One woman, one mission - that’s all it takes to change the world”
Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) was born in Uskup, Ottoman Empire (now Skopje, North Macedonia), on August 26, 1910, came to Kolkata at the age of 18 to pursue her life’s mission of caring for the poorest of the poor.
After spending nearly two decades at the Loreto Convent, where she taught Geography and Catechism, Mother Teresa stepped out of the convent to begin her unique mission exclusively for the poor and marginalized in response to a ‘call’ that she received from the Lord during a train journey to Darjeeling.
Mother Teresa persuaded the citizens of Kolkata that leprosy was not contagious. She helped the leprosy afflicted people to build a self-supporting colony at Titagarh.
Mother Teresa offered solace to the dying. She rescued babies from dustbins, picked up lepers from the streets. She was a MOTHER to them all. She cared for them, protected them and gave them respect and dignity as children of God in spite of their limitations.
The Missionaries of Charity - an Order which she started, now runs more than 755 homes for the destitute, orphans and special children, men and women with all disabilities in over 125 countries. They pursue their selfless task in feeding hungry mouths, caring for the terminally ill, teaching the slum children and run homes for the destitute, lepers and downtrodden members of the society.
Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize in the year 1979. She passed away in 1997. Though she is no more, she has left a message behind: ‘faith and compassion can heal the world’.
Through her simple yet powerful acts of love, she became a beacon of hope for millions of those neglected by the world. She received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and was canonized as a saint in 2016.
